Story of Menelmacar, Chapter 1

Named for the winter stars and being the first born, I was bestowed the name Menelmacar. Being named for the stars is nothing new for elves, but I was named after a human constellation. I did not find this out for many years because my clan was reclusive and nomadic. The only thing my ancestors told me about my name was that it meant (Swordsman of the Sky).

Seeing the great wars and the decimation of the great Elvin kingdom, the elders of our clan decided it was best to hide from the onslaught of man. Many called out clan cowards and many other names for going into hiding, but I call them blasphemous. For they left not because they where scared. Everyone knows how ferocious elves are in battle. They left for this very reason. The entire clan would have been lost in the great wars if it were not decided to give it up. It was thought better to live, grow stronger, and then kill our enemies.

Our clan has definitely grown stronger but I have yet to see us kill our enemies. Since my birth the clan has been growing steadily, getting to the point of not being able to be nomadic. We can still pick up and move without trace thanks to the help of huntresses that the clan has befriended along the way. Huntresses were mainly made of humans fighting against their male counterparts to show their superiority. Mutual enemies in this case made it acceptable to us elves to be acquainted with them.

My mother, Nessa, was one of these huntresses and was highly trusted because she was an elf. She had the beauty of Braialla, the green mother of the world, which allowed her to mesmerize men at their first glance. Amrod, son to Jyfarin and Elendiuria Lok-ri, was the clans priest and was very good at setting gemstones in ways that where beautiful and gave the wearer special protection. For this Nessa found great admiration in Amrod and he would make jewelry from the metals and stones she found while scouting. She found one stone with such luster that it seemed to look right into her very soul. Amrod then made this into a pendent for her and proposed when he gave the newly finished item to her.

We were found by the Irekei and there attacks where fierce and often. The clan was forced to move more often because the Irekei seemed to find us wherever we traveled. This was very odd because we were nowhere near a desert were these damned creatures thrive. After years of not knowing how to drive off the Irekei, the tribe set out to find a remedy from this problem. The travels of the tribe took us so far away from other elves we had no other options but to ask human mages for help.

Nessa went into labor with me when the mages were looking for the cause of the Irekei. She had the pendent on that my father had made her and it glowed brightly. This was the first time it had ever done anything. The magi knew this gem was one of the legendary gems of dragon's blood. Its evil power drew the Irekei to us. These gems give great power to evil but curse the righteous. The curse was once the gem was dispelled from the wearer they would not be capable of offspring for a century. My parents were happy with my arrival and distraught with the thought of not having other children right away.

The clan had no way to repay the magi so my parents gave them the rights to name me. Being very intellectual, they gave me the name Menelmacar. I am still trying to figure out why they gave me this name. But in this time the clan again found peace and settled down. As I grew up I found my ways in nature playing with the animals and learning what I could from them. Life was simple and I turned a hundred years old. Still I was nowhere close to being an adult my parents yearned for another child and had my sister, Chaeni.

After her birth my father gave to me a pendent, which he said was claim to our bloodline. He was quite old by this time and had given up hope of finding our old ancestors. Not a day went by after he gave me this when we where attacked by Irekei. Seems that our clan stayed in one place to long and we where discovered again. They came at night and killed my father in his sleep. Many others where killed that night along with my father, but it gave us an awakening to our tribe.

What once worked living separately from everyone else we were ready to join back with our other brother and sister elves. The attacks on our tribes continued and my mother fought with fury and vengeance. Huntresses were ordered to protect the children and hide them during attacks. One such attack the huntresses took the younger children and sent them to various huntress camps. This was the last time that I saw my sister for many years. I was seen fit to wield a blade and we took stride after the invaders. Within a few months we had found their city and burned it to the ground.

This battle fueled a burning in my soul to find not only my sister but also my ancient bloodline. I return to the human magi which gave me my name and they told me to follow my stars and they would lead me to my brethren. They also told me the house was one of the oldest elfish houses named House Lok-ri. All I had to do was follow the stars and I would find my long missed ancestors.
